Song of the Week: How Cosmo Sheldrake has encapsulated the essence of the Earth’s oceans

By Saul Myhre, Alliance Intern from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Cosmo Sheldrake is the perfect example of a creator who at the heart of their being commands a sustainable future. Using experimental techniques and sound samples from real ocean life, Sheldrake has created a song, let alone an album, which celebrates the beauty that lies beneath the surface of the earth’s oceans. In his piece titled Bathed in Sound, Cosmo ponders the “wonder of that wild wet world” which holds 94% of the earth’s living species, The Pacific Community recalls. Many species are endangered due to climate change and pollution.

Sheldrake states that since the music in his album Wild Wet World is composed by aquatic voices, it is only fair that “50% of the publishing income will be distributed among a variety of ocean conservation organizations,” according to his website. These entities include the Coral Reef Alliance and The Marine Conservation Society. Cosmo is a marvelous symbol of how an artistic influence can produce immense imaginative value along with a strong message, while simultaneously providing direct action in support of a world in healing.

Bathed in Sound lyrics

Closed my eyes
Went to sleep
And drifted downwards
I dreamt of whales floating there
All bathed in sound
All wrapped in plankton
And glinting green
Drifting onwards
Through shifting seas
Closed my eyes
Went to sleep
And drifted downwards
I dreamed of whales
Floating there
All bathed in sound
All wrapped in plankton
And floating round us
Alive with purpose
And with a will
Oh the wonder of that wild wet world
Of that wild wet world beneath
Oh the wonder of that wild wet world
Of that wild wet world beneath
