The Challenge: Can We Stop the Starvation of 385 Million People?
“There’s a problem that most people are unaware of. We’ve gone from 80 million people in the world on the verge of starvation five years ago to 385 million. And the last time it was this brutal, and it wasn’t quite this bad, was 40 years ago when Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones and that group came together to get the world to unify. Because music goes past politics to unify people, it raised money and it fed people,” Tony Robbins shared in a CNN Interview.
Robbins shared, “I was fed when I was 11 years old, and we had no food.” That was his inspiration to provide a billion meals in the US over an eight-year period.
After his work in the US, he realized the problem is so much bigger. He partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) and asked its head, “How many meals will it take to fill in the blanks for the next 10 years so we get sustainability?” The response was 50 to 60 billion meals. “So I said, how about if we do 100 billion meals?” And so was born the WFP’s 100B Meal Challenge.
“It sounded crazy at the beginning but we’ve already delivered 62 billion meals in some of the roughest areas of the world.”
